Louise Barretto, Family solicitor and Deputy Head of the Family department at Fisher Meredith, talks about Mediation as an alternative approach to dealing with financial and children disputes on divorce or dissolution of a Civil Partnership.

Since early 2011 it has become compulsory for divorcing couples to attend a Mediation Information session before they issue proceedings to sort out finances or children matters.

During Mediation you will deal with an independent Family mediator who is impartial and able to guide parties through their various issues but cannot give legal advice.

Mediation is a voluntary process which will not be suitable for everyone including in cases of domestic violence or when one party feels particularly vulnerable. At Fisher Meredith we have trained Family mediators who can assess if Mediation is the right option for you and  offer this service if it is.

Some of the benefits of Mediation include better control by both parties of the process, and a constructive and less stressful environment for conducting the discussions.
