Higher Education

Many of us choose higher education as a route to a better career. A college or university education is meant to broaden our minds and bring us into contact with new people and life experiences. However, there may be occasions when things go wrong and it may not be easy to see the best way forward.

Entering higher education

Even before embarking on your path to higher education, you may encounter problems with admissions by the college or university where you wish to study.

Having started your course, you could find yourself facing disciplinary issues or exclusion. During the course of your studies you could become a victim of sexual harassment, racial or disability discrimination. Towards the end of your studies, you may not be satisfied with the content or course structure. You may be left with the feeling that the college or university is in potential breach of contract or failing its duties to protect you.

When you encounter these types of problems your life can suddenly become very stressful.

If you are dissatisfied with the treatment you have received by your university or college, or indeed the content or structure of your course, then you have the right to complain to the institution itself and/or to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA). With the right legal advice, it may be possible to bring a legal action against the institution.

Types of complaints

Fisher Meredith’s Education Law solicitors are at the forefront of Education Law. We can help students in higher education with the following problems:

  • Admissions and exclusions
  • Disciplinary issues
  • Breach of contract claims
  • Sex, race or disability discrimination claims
  • Course structure and content complaints

Important things to consider

When faced with a problem at college or university, do not feel pressured to accept someone else’s view. Keep a record of important conversations and keep copies of any course correspondence and documents. If you are worried that things are happening too quickly, or getting out of hand, talk to a solicitor as soon as possible.
